[C320-list] winterizing

One thing I've noticed over the last several years is that AA and AAA alkaline batteries seem to be much more prone to leaking than they were even a few years ago. I've tried varying name brands with no real difference. I've also noticed that there is no longer a guarantee to replace damaged devices if they do leak from any of the manufacturers. So far I've had several flashlights, headlamps, a Davis bearing compass, hand held VHF, etc ruined over the winter by corroded and burst batteries.

For the past 2 seasons I've removed all the batteries (like you're supposed to but nobody does) over the winter and haven't had a problem. I was wondering if anyone knew if my observations are true (more leaks) and whether they are more likely to leak if left over the winter. We do get some sub freezing days here in NC.

Just curious
