Hi, I hadn't tweeked to it, but I agree. Current batteries have also been corroding "more than in past" in my devices. So not better in all ways.
I will now be more vigilant.

Hi,
They are certainly more prone to leaking than they used to be. They're all competing for the most power which results in thinner internal wrappers to protect against leaking. One thing that isn't always obvious is you should handle them carefully. If you drop one of them on a hard surface, it's more likely to leak down the road because it could have pierced the protective inner wrapper. Also, some devices turn off but still have some very small standby currents, especially devices that don't have hard on/off switches.
I did a test once and took batteries from the same package put 4 in the device I didn't care about and left 4 out. About a year later (when I remembered about it), I ran across it and found that the batteries in the lantern had corroded but the other 4 were fine and still charged. The lantern was off, so there must have been some very small current leakage happening or some sort of dissimilar metal thing going on somewhere in the battery holder which could have contributed.
Cheers!

One thing I've noticed over the last several years is that AA and
AAA alkaline batteries seem to be much more prone to leaking than
they were even a few years ago. I've tried varying name brands with
no real difference. I've also noticed that there is no longer a
guarantee to replace damaged devices if they do leak from any of the
manufacturers. So far I've had several flashlights, headlamps, a
Davis bearing compass, hand held VHF, etc ruined over the winter by
corroded and burst batteries.
For the past 2 seasons I've removed all the batteries (like you're
supposed to but nobody does) over the winter and haven't had a
problem. I was wondering if anyone knew if my observations are true
(more leaks) and whether they are more likely to leak if left over
the winter. We do get some sub freezing days here in NC.
Just curious
