That isn't necessary. The ST4000+ control head has NMEA inputs and you 
should be able to connect NMEA output from the Garmin unit directly. I 
did this previously to connect my Garmin handheld GPS to the ST4000+. (I 
no longer have either one, however.)

 From memory...

The negative NMEA connection between the Garmin and ST4000 needs to be 
connected also to 12v negative.

The Garmin must support 4800 baud NMEA output.

The Garmin unit will default to Garmin specific NMEA sentences as 
output. There should be a an option in the Garmin setup to change this 
to NMEA standard sentences. Otherwise the AP will not understand the 
messages coming from the chartplotter.

The ST4000 has trouble with long waypoint names. My recollection is that 
I dealt with this by keeping them very short in the GPS. I dimly recall 
an option in the Garmin to force shorter names when WP info was output 
to the AP. But then the WP names displayed on the control head do not 
necessarily match what you see on the chartplotter. This was not a big 
deal for me once I got used to it.

Hope this helps. And check everything since it's been a few years since 
I did this.

My Garmin unit was a GPSMAP76 that I mounted at the top of the binnacle 
using a bicycle mount. I ran a cable (sourced from Garmin to get the 
right connector) from the back of the GPS to the interior of the Navpod 
to make the connection to the AP control head. This arrangement let me 
take the GPS home with me. But I'm happier with the big color screen on 
the Raymarine chartplotter I have now.
