[C320-list] Transmission oil change

I followed this thread with interest and came to the same conclusion that John and others have; the trans spec is for SAE 30 oil. My engine manual and the name plate on the trans both say SAE 20/30 HD. The name plate also says Oil QTY 0.6 litres while the manual mentions both 0.3 L and Total effective 0.6 L (rake angle 8 deg)

All this discussion prompted me to change the oil (the level had been checked periodical and was always at correct level) and while I did extract 0.3 litres almost exactly, what I extracted looked like ATF (Auto Trans Fluid) Thin and red in colour. The trans has been working fine as far as I could tell.

So my first stop for advice is here at this group and next will be the local Yanmar Marine dealer.

With no advice my plan would be to fill it up with SAE 30 run the trans a bit at dock in forward and reverse and then suck that out and refill with SAE 30 and consider the oil changed.

I believe the engine has about 750 hours on it (according to the hour meter) and I have no idea when the last trans oil change was done but it was before 540 hrs when we got the boat.

Your advise welcome

Those of you changing the tranny oil once a year are engaging in unnecessary time and effort. The engine manual calls for a transmission oil change every 150hr, unless the engine is new then after the first 50hr and every 150hr after that. There is really no advantage to changing lubricants more often than the manufacturer's recommendation; unless of course the lubricant has become contaminated somehow. The recommended lubricant for the transmission is SAE30 engine oil.cheersJohnM1999#574
