[C320-list] Temp gauge

First engine start of the season and with key on and before the engine started the temp gauge read 180. Removing the connection on the temp sensor in the hose coupling on the port side of engine, at least I think it's the sensor, gauge at baseline with key on. Started engine with sensor connected and 180 again at startup and no audible alarm. Sensor, gauge, or both?  Is there a trouble shooting procedure on the website like for the fuel gauge. 2004, yanmar 3gm.
