Ted
By and large everything in Uk and Ireland is more expensive than in USA unless it's actually made in the UK or Ireland!
All electrics are 220v not 110v but most modern electronics and chargers seem to be multi voltage. Electrical (as distinct from electronic) items are probably NIT dual voltage and will not work over here. The actual plug is different but adaptors are available cheaply at airport (probably best to buy in Canada if possible as it seems to me that airport sales tend to be mainly to allow the conversion from airport country to destination country)
Probably he won't need his hockey stick or skates, although there are some ice rinks around! Having said that American sports are making a steady inroad over here now!
Climate is generally less severe but summers also less hot!
I am an airline pilot by profession and the differences between UK and Ireland and North America are minimal! Similar clothing and culture etc. I have bought a lot of small boat kit (anchor, portable VHF etc) on visits to US.
These days, also, it's cheap and easy to phone home and get something sent out that can only be found at home
Biggest things he will miss, I think, will be favourite foods and candy etc but otherwise I wouldn't worry too much. He will soon be drinking Guiness and singing Irish songs!
If you ever visit him in the summer, pop over to Cornwall in Uk and come sailing with us!
G
