Have you checked out the fresh-water pump?  I had to replace that as well.

Thanks.  I'll call TA Diesel first thing tomorrow morning to source the
thermostat and gaskets.

Jeff, thanks about the stainless elbow.  If I replace the elbow, I'll
consider yours.  Though, don't know the pros cons of the stainless versus
cast iron.

Frank, thanks for the details.  Much appreciated.  I'll make sure to torque
carefully.

I inspected the heat exchanger, and it's not corroded, looks clean.

Background, recently acquired this boat.  Have been having over heating
problems ever since.  First found the impeller torn (but all fins intact).
Replaced, still over heating.  Pulled heat exchanger, found 8 p.o. fins in
front.  Exchanger was clean.  Thought for sure that was the problem.  Did a
trial run yesterday in marina, in 40 mins of low RPM's, got above 220.  So,
still overheating.  I'm getting water flow steady out of exhaust, so next
step is thermostat.  If that doesn't solve, then I'll look at elbow, then
pump.

I'm having a blast working on the engine, but I'm drooling over a proper
sail.
