The stove has a thermal valve on each knob. When you light the stove, push and hold the knob in. This bypasses the thermal valve and allows the gas to flow through. Once the burner heats up you can release the button. It is similar to lighting a pilot light. The thermal valve is a safety feature that shuts off the gas if the flame goes out and the burner cools down.
