Sorry I just saw this one.

It is probably the light switch that is causing the intermittent behavior.
  You can take the light fixture down and remove the switch.  Then you can
gently pry the toggle out of the switch.  Beneath it you will find some
very small parts that are likely corroded.  Clean these up with some 600
grit sand paper and you should be good to go.

If you have a corroded switch or fixture you may also have moisture
intrusion in your deck somewhere.  You might want to poke around to make
sure you don't have a chainplate or portlight leaking water into your deck
near your light fixture.
