[C320-list] EV1-- Wheel Pilot

Thanks to all for the quick responses. I also checked the archives and
found that others have had the same problem. The Raymarine instructions
suggest that the new pin, if installed with the offset down, will work in
the old mounting holes. That required about 5/8" drop in the engine pod,
and I was able to do that. Brought the new pin home to cut it and I think
that it will work now. The motor will need to be installed on the port side
as it was really close to the pod with the old wheel pilot. So I'll need to
accept the compass interference.

Now I'm finding that there will probably be some interference with the
forward/reverse lever, but I think that I can adjust the swing by either
lengthening or shortening the attachment point at the transmission.

Doug - The 2000 year 320 has an engine pod that was very close to the wheel.
I added a washer to pull the wheel out because it was so close. And I had
to trim back the lever on the ST4000 so that it didn't hit. The old pin was
right at the top of the engine pod, so no room to use the new offset pin
without moving the pod.

Ken - I just drilled new clearance holes in the back of the pod and used the
existing mounting stud and screw. Didn't need to drill any new holes in the
pedestal. Maximum that I could move it was about 5/8" and I'm hoping that
is enough.

The pod is attached by two screws threaded into the pedestal. Drilling with
care and re-tapping is an option. I was able to lengthen the slot on the
wheel drive with a drill and rotary tool enough for the pin to work at its
existing location.

I?m assuming its a wheelpilot that you are fitting. If so consider the lever
arm that is used to enage the drive. It will be bloxked by the top of the
pod.
You can spin the moror around to fit it higher up but if you do the magnetic
influence on the binnacle compass is near uncorrectable Graeme #366, 1996,

Interesting - I installed the EV100 last year on my Hull #350 and had no
issues. Are the newer pods larger or mounted higher?

What about installing the pin at top of the wheel instead of bottom? Also,
the pin bracket is offset if I recall. Can you flip it around 180? the other
way?

Hi Chuck, yes I lowered the engine pod. Our 320 came with the older black
wheel drive which was smaller in diameter than the replacement newer grey
one. The old one was broken.

I lowered the pod as little as possible to allow pin repositioning lower and
the steel tube just pushed down or up (I do not remember) so no wire issues.
I think I may have been able to reuse 2 of the pin mounting holes leaving
only 2 exposed as evidence of the change.

Good Luck.
