Jeff-
I still would recommend a 40 amp unit if you decide to replace your charger.  More power means it doesn't need to work as hard. And the 30 amp normal shorepower feed is not a problem.
A clarification about what I sent to you previously, when you were asking about the ground …. we were talking about the charger's DC case ground (and your question about the charger manual saying to connect it to the buss bar). I connected both the case ground (on the left side of the charger) and the charger's DC output ground (negative on the right bottom of the charger) to the battery negative terminal.  This effectively connected it to the engine negative/ground without having to run a separate cable all the way to the control panel on the opposite side of the boat/engine. The AC ground of the new charger was connected to the existing AC feed ground wire coming to the charger. I didn't mix these up (which would be a big goof).
I'm not going to specifically comment on your question about the battery selector, since our systems are different.  I only have two 4D batteries.  They are both charged even if the selector is off and shorepower is on.  When I am in my slip and on shorpower, I normally leave the switch on "both".  However, when I sail, I alternate which battery I select to start and run on and leave the other in reserve for starting.
