[C320-list] Which Racor Filter?

If you are changing the Racor after just 20 hours of run time, wow. That seems ultra conservative to me. I look at the bowl and typically run for several seasons before a change, so a few hundred hours. I am particular to the fuel I put in and keep the tank topped off to avoid water intrusion. I’ve never clogged a filter in over 14 years.

There web site (Racornew.com <http://racornew.com/> >>>>> Product News. >>>>> FAQs) state that you should use a 2 micron if its the only filter protecting the engine. At two microns, you might be begging for clogs but I guess it comes down to how clean your fuel is and how much you're running the engine. I put about 20 hrs on this past summer and I change the Racor at each layup. Twenty hours converts to about 10 gallons of fuel so I’m guessing I could have run a half micron filter and been just fine!

>> Contrary to the advice I was given at the strictly sail show last year, there dosn’t seem to be any benefit to the fuel pump by running the 30 micron filter. Racor also states on their web site that the 10 micron filter does a better job at separating water out of the system than the 30. Guess I’ll be switching back to the R15T before I splash the boat next spring.

>> Wish I had researched the advice I was given before installing the R15P last week. Oh well, its thirty buck burned on the wrong filter and no harm done. Live and learn….its a boat and it seems the learning never ends.

On the Catalina Direct site today, I came across their listing for a Raycor R15T, which filters to 10 microns. Catalina Direct's description for the R15T includes this language:
>>>
>>> "Be careful which filter you use. There are several replacement elements available that look identical. For example, there is what appears to be the same filter that only filters down to 30 microns. It leaves particles in the fuel that are too big and may clog the engine's filter. Another version filters to only 2 microns. This is filtering particles from the fuel that are so small it may clog almost immediately, leaving you without power soon after replacement.”
>>>
>>> The 2-micron language sounds like a reference to the R24S. What do you think? Is the R15T a better option than the R24S? Thanks.
