[C320-list] C320-list Digest, Vol 3581, Issue 2

I have 30 micron and 10, but I don’t worry about it. I’ve never had a dirty filter in 11 years of owning diesels. In fact, when I first changed the filter on my 320 a year ago, it was clean, even though it appeared to have been there for 10 to 20 years.

I think that because the dissimilar metals in the filter and the housing had welded together, to the point where I took the filter to a car repair shop to try to separate them.

The diesel guru Nigel Calder says filter should be the last line of defense. Clean the tank if you think it’s dirty. Then filter the fuel with an aircraft filter, change O rings on the fuel cap regularly and use biocide and additive regularly. (You need extra lubrication with today’s low sulphur diesel.)

Dave, you’re absolutely right. The 10 micron filter for my boat is the R24T—that’s the one that fits on my filter housing. Replaced the R24S this morning and bled the system at the Wix filter on the engine.

On the Catalina Direct site today, I came across their listing for a Raycor R15T, which filters to 10 microns. Catalina Direct's description for the R15T includes this language:

For example, there is what appears to be the same filter that only filters down to 30 microns. It leaves particles in the fuel that are too big and may clog the engine's filter. Another version filters to only 2 microns. This is filtering particles from the fuel that are so small it may clog almost immediately, leaving you without power soon after replacement.”
