Hello David,
I removed and replaced the fuel tank on our 97 C320(#441)4 years ago purchasing the replacement tank from Ezell Industries.  One additional step you may want to consider is removing the shelf over the tank.  I was able to access the shelf fasteners from the aft starboard locker.  This allowed more space to maneuver the tank and extract it through the aft cabin access hatch and clean up the fuel that leaked in area below the tank.  Also added another retention strap to better secure the tank from movement.  Backed into the slip to have easy access to the dock from the cockpit when carrying the tank.
Hope this helps.

I have decided to replace my existing fuel tank, and thanks again to everyone for your great advice! This post is really directed to those who have done the replacement.

I looked in the Articles section to see if we have an article on doing the swap out, with no luck. From other posts, I understand that I remove the aft cabin hatch and bring the old tank out through the aft cabin. Here?s what I?m contemplating:

? Use a drill pump (since I?m working with diesel) to pump out the old tank into clean five-gallon buckets, running the fuel through a Mr. Funnel AF15CB Fuel Filter <https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000SOFLL6/ref=as_li_ss_tl?tag=theboagal0a-20&ie=UTF8&linkId=1ccc59054c3e9afa46b52d710f0fb87c> as it?s pumped.

? Remove the old tank, and install the new tank.

? Fill the new tank with the filtered fuel from the buckets, using a shaker siphon hose <https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EM3CHP6/?coliid=I1KMWYQQ640JJK&colid=27XR0SSXRN8FE&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it>.

? Prime and bleed the system from the Racor.

Does that look like a viable plan? Any other suggestions or advice that you might offer? Thanks for your help.

Just a small note to all of this discussion. I noted this experience a few years ago.

After 8 years since my last fuel polishing, I thought I should clean my fuel and tank. As it was going to cost me over $1000 to have my fuel ?polished? and the tank cleaned, I opted to just replace my fuel. I bought diesel jugs, cheap on sale (at Canadian Tire). I heeled the boat with the boom over the dockside to get the fuel over in one corner of the tank. I then pumped out a few litres with my oil-change sump to see what was in the bottom of the tank. Not pretty! When the fuel was pumping out clear I pumped it into the jugs. I took all of that diesel to our recycling centre for free (but you don?t get the jugs back) where they process it for other uses or less sensitive engines. This whole exercise cost me ~ $100 for the diesel replacement and the jugs. Annual sampling shows the fuel still clean in the tank bottom.

David,
Please tell me you're not really going to suck on the end of the hose to
start a diesel siphon!

Just a quick comment, David.? In our 1996 320, the tank came out through
the starboard locker hatch after removing the retaining brackets and the
connections. Just barely as I recall, but it does go though. On our
boat, the aft cabin access door is on the port side making it much more
difficult to go that way.? Maybe your layout is different.

One other thing I added to my new tank, besides all new hoses was a shutoff valve at the primary filter to make fuel filter changes much easier than having to crawl back and use the shutoff valve. Maybe someone already mentioned this but every time I change the fuel filter I thank myself for doing this. It wasn?t my brilliant idea, learned about it on this forum.

I would like to do that on my 2007 MKII with a Yanmar 3YM30. Does anybody happen to know the hose size?

I do it all the time! I fill my tank by placing a five-gallon diesel jug on the stern rail seat and siphoning the diesel into the tank.

The trick is to have a long hose. That way, you can get your mouth off it when the diesel is hallway through. It only takes one mouthful to learn ?

Jack,
do your mouth a favor and get a diesel priming pump!
https://www.amazon.com/Rubber-Transfer-Vacuum-Gasoline-Accessories/dp/B06X3R9YBN/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=diesel+primer+pump&qid=1587667663&sr=8-3

It's what I use, works great, no diesel in your mouth!  I only fill by
siphon from a 5 gallon can.
