lightning.

The risk is actually quite small due to the nature of the movement that is
almost always
at play in a sailboat mast.  This guy describes how a mast actually diverts
lightning away.
Damage to electronics can occur from lightning that strikes the water near
the boat
and the only solution is to disconnect the electronics when the risk in
near.
