I am not sure I completely understand the need to machine the flange face when installing on a new shaft.   But I suppose the procedure is mount the flange on the new shaft, mark the flange/shaft orientation, Mark the set screw locations , remove flange, drill in detents for the set screws, replace the flange in the correct orientation, tighten set screws, mount the shaft in a lathe and face the flange.  Then remove the flange and install the new shaft in boatOr am I missing something.Ken Geiger Northern Dream  #765Sent from my Samsung Galaxy smartphone.

I had the stern placed over a grassydivider in the lot so I just dug a hole to drop the rudder down. Since youare replacing the bronze shaft you should be able to wrap tape around it anduse a vice grips and hammer to tap it out of the coupling. Use a block ofwood on the end of the new shaft to tap it back in. I just soaped up the keyway end and had no real problem.     On Thursday, January 2, 2020, 9:28:09 AM CST, Chuck Mueller<katchu at chartermi.net> wrote:    I'm thinking about replacing my bronze shaft with stainless steel, plusreplacing stuffing box, and replacing a Kiwi prop with a Flex-o-fold.? Isearched the archives and found Jeff Hare's suggestion for the Aqualoy A1955x1" shaft.? I also know that removing the cutlass bearing should allow meto slide the shaft past the rudder. But two other questions:? How hard is it to remove the coupling disc fromthe engine end of the shaft?? And is it necessary to machine and reface thatcoupling before re-installation?ThanksChuck MuellerNorthwind #676Holland, MI
