Chuck, you can also check with Catalina Parts dept. and get a dimpled shaft from them maybe. Now thinking about it that may be where I got my original stainless

I ordered my shaft from a local yacht yard and it came already dimpled.

 Thanks Pat
I was under the impression that it was not necessary to drop the rudder if
the cutlass bearing was removed.  Can anyone confirm?  It sounds like you
just put the old coupler on the new shaft without any machining.  I was
reading the Deep Blue Yacht site, and they seem to recommend that the shaft
be dimpled where the screws contact, and that the face be machined.  Any
other opinions?  I have a local machinist that can probably do this, but I
could also order a new coupler and have it machined by Deep Blue.  They
charge more for the machining than for the coiupler.

I replaced mine several years ago. I had the stern placed over a grassy
divider in the lot so I just dug a hole to drop the rudder down. Since you
are replacing the bronze shaft you should be able to wrap tape around it and
use a vice grips and hammer to tap it out of the coupling. Use a block of
wood on the end of the new shaft to tap it back in. I just soaped up the key
way end and had no real problem.

I'm thinking about replacing my bronze shaft with stainless steel, plus
replacing stuffing box, and replacing a Kiwi prop with a Flex-o-fold.? I
searched the archives and found Jeff Hare's suggestion for the Aqualoy A19
55x1" shaft.? I also know that removing the cutlass bearing should allow me
to slide the shaft past the rudder.
But two other questions:? How hard is it to remove the coupling disc from
the engine end of the shaft?? And is it necessary to machine and reface that
coupling before re-installation?
Thanks
