I would tend to agree with you.   Especially if the winds are gusty and the seas are large.   I can't imagine that the setup would be stable enough to constantly return to the same apparent wind angle.

Sorry...you misunderstood my question.  Yes, a C320 will heave to quite
nicely.    But forereach *comfortably* at 5 kts in heavy seas...with my
limited experience on the Chesapeake in rough weather I'm inclined to doubt this and I’m less inclined to try it.
