I think that’s a good idea for creating the mold.   Then follow the process
on the website above to make the repair.

One thing that can be tricky is getting the wax to cooperate the way a
silicon mold will as in the video.  I think a variation on the DIY theme
would be to make a wax mold as you suggest, then make a plug out of
something more solid and then make a silicone mold after that from the
plug.   The trick in my mind is to make the final mold out of something
flexible and durable enough to ship to me after the OPs repairs are
completed so I can repair a couple small dings in my grey non skid.   ;).
