[C320-list] EV-100 install on early 320

I installed an EV-100 wheel autopilot on my 1995 C320 this summer. I was somewhat uneasy about how well it would perform given all the comments in the group about how much better the below deck approach would be. Nevertheless, I got a deal on the complete autopilot with a rebate from Raymarine making the price about $1000, much cheaper than the below deck alternative. For me it was the difference between getting it now and waiting until I could afford the much more expensive option.

I have been happy with the install though I haven't used it in heavy weather. My boat originally had the ST-4000 autopilot installed, although it wasn't functional by the time I bought her. It did mean that the holes I needed were already drilled, even if everything else had to be installed from scratch.

I put the controller in the port aft locker on the bulkhead after of the lazarette above the fridge compressor. I put the compass under the port bunk forward of the chart table. I read that getting it near the center of the boat helps it better deal with wave motion.

I also read that getting the rudder sensor helps with keeping a better course with fewer wheel adjustments and so I installed that after a few weeks. No real noticeable difference so far but I guess it will be better.

I don't have the issue that Jeff mentioned of the motor spinning when powering up.

Would I prefer the below deck option? Yes, for sure. Am I happy to have a functioning autopilot? Most definitely.

Ade.
