[C320-list] Stuffing box question

Jeff:

Jeez, ease up. Don’t get so worked up over so little.

I’ve been sailing off and on for 40 years and totally refitted two sailboats. I think anyone who has read my posts here knows that I’m hardly a novice either at sailing or boat work.

I can fiberglass, wire, splice, troubleshoot, sew, glue, drill and cut properly. I’ve sailed all over Florida and dealt with any number of crises in open water and lonely bays.

I don’t think repacking a stuffing box is nearly as scary as, say, hoisting myself up a mast, which I used to do in my younger days. Or dealing with a split stuffing box hose, which I did on a previous sailboat. (Hose clamps and a bicycle tube did the trick until I could get to a boatyard.)

I think Graeme did a good job of quantifying the risk for me. From there, I’m capable of judging what’s right and formulating a backup plan in case things go wrong.
