I had the same rant as you a few years back until someone explained the logic, which isn’t obvious

It’s not supposed to be a “forum” it’s an email list and it’s that way for a reason.  When you’re upside down in the rear locker trying to figure out how the steering cables are routed, with no decent WiFi because you’re anchored in the back of beyond then so long as you have a cellular signal you can send an email

Unlike a forum post, that email you send will ping up on our phones straight away, and often within minutes you will get a reply.

The threads are archived in a “forum format” for reference but you are correct that you cannot post directly from that platform

I also made the mistake of subscribing to a daily summary rather than to individual emails, which makes the threads much easier to follow

It’s a bit old fashioned but it’s light on data usage and less dependent on good internet connection so ideal for sailors who aren’t always close to civilisation. (Or do I mean civilised!)
