Go to marine how to and read up on using the butyl tape.   A proper repair
will address any damage (hopefully none) done to the core in that area as
well as ensure proper sealant on not only the flange but also the screws.
You can see how to go about this on that site.   Keep in mind that you may
need to use some thickened epoxy to repair any water damage if you find
any.

I bought two rolls of bed it tape 5 years ago.   The only places I wouldn’t
recco bed it is for rebedding the deadlights and also for rebedding hatch
lenses.   There you need a proper adhesive/sealant.   Bed it is not an
adhesive so you can use it in areas that you need 'holding power'.
