[C320-list] Optimal Speed and Lower RPM concerns- Yanmar 3GM30F and Autoprop

I agree with Joe. I had about 1550 hours on my 3GM30 and the elbow developed a pinhole leak on the side of the elbow.  Upon removal the elbow was constricted but everything else was ok. I replaced the exhaust hose and hose clamps. Many hours later of trying to get the elbow safely back on I took it to a shop (insert bloody knuckles, tears and expletives here).   They had to use a massive vice and crow bar to properly screw it back together so the exhaust fumes don’t leak. 

It was at that moment I decided if there are things that can kill me I am going to have someone else do the work. I applaud the rest of you who do it on your own, but this one was a no-brainer for me.

An excellent Yanmar certified mechanic (and friend) told me to rev the engine to 4000rpm for a short burst after stopping  in a marina berth or anchorage. This will clear the system. So I have been doing this for 10 years now and on inspection my tubes are completely clean, as is the elbow.  He also taught me that there is a small inspection port on the elbow where using a ?digital exam technique? you can feel (inspect) the inside of the elbow without dismantling anything. This exam is and has been done annually.
