[C320-list] Waste deck fitting

Oh boy. You're in for it!. Ours is hull 848, by the way.
In order to access the hose clamps for the deck waste fitting, you need
to remove the medicine cabinet. In order to do that, we had to remove
the two vented loops. In order to do that.....I cut an access hole
(4") and then installed screw in deck plate to make it look nice.
It's really a pain to get at it. BUT, it can be done. Might want to
put a new vent hose in there too while you're in there.
Feel free to follow up with me if you have any follow-up questions.

I finally decided to dive into fixing the leak at the waste deck
fitting. I have things pulled apart but have absolutely no idea how
to get back behind the medicine cabinet in the head and from the
sides to get at the hoses. I’ve figured out how to dismantle the
medicine cabinet but what else do you have to dismantle to get back
     behind there?

is 21 years. So I guess I'm adding another "fun" project to the

the fitting to be able to lift up the fitting at least enough to be
able to clean the fitting and deck mating surfaces and apply the
tape (or to be able to completely remove the fitting if any deck
repair with epoxy is first needed).? If it hasn't been done before
based on your hull age, it may also be advisable to replace the
waste pump out hose from your tank to the fitting now. And ..... if
you are in any doubt about your waste hoses integrity, maybe "do the
dirty" and also replace the waste hose from the head into the tank.?
I replaced ALL, as well as the smaller diameter water feed hoses in
order to try to tackle an odor issue.? The hardest part was getting
my hand into position to remove and install the new waste pump out
hose end at the bottom of the tank.??
     >> Another comment ..... several people have recommended butyl
tape.? Be careful and consider if the fitting install screws may rip
the tape as you screw them in?? If there is any concern, then 4200
sealant may be better since you can also "butter" the screw threads
with 4200 to make sure you get a good seal (and wipe away the excess
     on top).

year the same way. However I will caution you that the screws are
only self-tapping screws, so you'll want to be careful about
overtightening them, which could strip the holes and cause you other
     issues.

     >> I'm looking for advice on whether I need to add a fifth bolt for
the longer anchor roller. Details below.
     >>
     >> Yesterday I replaced my short, original anchor roller with the
longer version from Catalina Direct. I tried putting a Rocna 15 on
the short roller but, just like others on the list before me, I
couldn't make this work (I know some people have but I couldn't find
a way to secure it and not strike the hull).
     >>
     >> It was tricky to reach the bolts in front of the anchor locker,
but I managed it and eventually removed the old roller. The backing
plate for the original roller was securely attached underneath
including being partly embedded in some sealant that appeared to be
part of the deck/hull joint and I didn't want to remove it.
Fortunately, the new roller had the holes in the same place, so it
was a drop-in replacement. I reused the backing plate and the
original bolts with a liberal amount of 5200.
     >>
     >> Now to the question: how many bolts do the OEM longer rollers
use? My shorter roller had four in an offset staggered pattern every
3", two on each side 6" apart. The new roller also includes a fifth
hole, in line with the fourth. You can see this on the product page
     [1].
     >>
     >> Having pondered this a little, I'm now wondering whether I need
to add this fifth bolt? Any thoughts? On the one hand, it was
securely fastened previously with four (and even with the bolts
removed it was hard to remove the original 5200). On the other,
there is more of a lifting moment now that the roller extends much
further forward. I'm not sure if adding another bolt will make a
significant difference. If I need to add another bolt, I will have
to drill down through the deck and original backing plate.

to be able to clean the fitting and deck mating surfaces and apply
the tape (or to be able to completely remove the fitting if any deck
repair with epoxy is first needed).?
If there is any concern, then 4200
sealant may be better since you can also "butter" the screw threads
with 4200 to make sure you get a good seal (and wipe away the excess
     on top).

     >>>
     >>>
     >>>
     >>>
     >>>
     >>>
     >>> Thanks for your thoughts,

you subscribe to the theory that everything of that age has to go,
you will end up with an entirely new boat ? and a lot less money in
     the bank.
     >
     > Yeah, my fridge had to be replaced when I bought my boat, and my
macerator pump, and my shower pump, and my bilge pump, and my
rigging, but there are many items on my boat that are functioning
quite well despite their age. Take the time to examine them before
     you replace them.
     >
     > Hoses will show signs of wear and drip long before they split
open. They are designed to avoid catastrophic failure. Carry an old
bicycle tube and some hose clamps. If one goes, you can patch it
until you get to the next port.
     >
     > My propane hose is 20 years old and appears fine. So are the hoses
to the water heater. My water lines work well. The hose from the
anchor locker to the through hull looks like new. The scupper hoses
are great, although I had to replace one because the PO cut it
before the bank repossessed the boat.
     >
     > I did replace all of the hoses on the diesel when I bought the
boat. And I replaced my fuel system from the tank to the fuel pump.
I hated the stock fuel filter. Once I replaced it with a Racor 500,
I thought, What the hell, do it all. The old hoses didn?t fit
     anyway.
     >
     > And never trust a hose clamp. Even though they claim to be
stainless steel, some parts of them never are. I learned this the
difficult way, when the clamp broke on the hose leading from the
holding tank to the through hull. Yecch.
     >
     > I guess what I?m saying is that replacing stuff can become an
addiction on a boat. It?s not always necessary.

is 21 years. So I guess I'm adding another "fun" project to the

based on your hull age, it may also be advisable to replace the
waste pump out hose from your tank to the fitting now. And ..... if
you are in any doubt about your waste hoses integrity, maybe "do the
dirty" and also replace the waste hose from the head into the tank.?
I replaced ALL, as well as the smaller diameter water feed hoses in
order to try to tackle an odor issue.? The hardest part was getting
my hand into position to remove and install the new waste pump out
hose end at the bottom of the tank.??
     >> Another comment ..... several people have recommended butyl
tape.? Be careful and consider if the fitting install screws may rip
the tape as you screw them in?? If there is any concern, then 4200
sealant may be better since you can also "butter" the screw threads
with 4200 to make sure you get a good seal (and wipe away the excess
     on top).

     >> Yes that is correct. I redid my forward water fill fitting last
year the same way. However I will caution you that the screws are
only self-tapping screws, so you'll want to be careful about
overtightening them, which could strip the holes and cause you other
     issues.
     >>
     >> Additionally, you'll probably need to tighten them a few times
over the next couple months, because the Butyl never really hardens.
And you'll occasionally need to clean up the butyl that oozes out
around the fitting until everything seats properly.

the longer anchor roller.
     >>
     >>
     >>
     >>
