Hi John,

Here’s an idea, though I must warn you I haven’t tried it.

If you have a #2 aft reef line threaded right through the boom with enough length at the forward end you might be able to pull a boom’s length of this line aft - without losing the forward end!  Also pull aft the outhaul line completely. Now wrap these lines tightly together at the boom end with some waxed cotton, then pull the reef line back to where it was, hopefully with the outhaul still attached.

N.B. Don’t try this with #1 reef line if your boat is like mine, as it uses the single line reefing system with a pulley block inside the boom. That won’t do what you want.
