[C320-list] [weaver dinghy davits

Steve,

I have installed the Weaver Snap Davits and have had good luck.

David Swanson has a good article on the subject on the C320.org site, just
do a search on his name. My boat is older and does not have the higher
"seats" or whatever they are molded into the transom but the process is the
same. Instructions from Weaver are complete and I had great help from
Jason Fetting from the Weaver factory.

I would say the most important part is getting the measurements correct for
the drop heads which are the parts attached to the transom that hold the
clips that you hook on to when docking. This is all covered in the Weaver
installation instructions. I had to have one drop head remanufactured
because I did not take a careful measurement with the dinghy loaded. This
was not a big problem, just the cost and time of getting another drop
head.

These dimensions are important because they ensure that the dinghy yokes
are at the correct elevation as you pull up to your boat. If yokes are too
high, you must load down that side of the dinghy to engage with the drop
head clips. Too low and you have a hard time in the other direction.

And speaking of drop heads, we got the adjustable height models This allows
us to have the clips at the optimum elevation when leaving and docking the
dinghy and then allows us to raise the dinghy about a foot for better sea
level clearance when cruising.

I have seen some criticism about clipping in your dinghy in rough water and
potential damage caused by davit drop heads hitting against the dingy
tube. This does happen but I have never felt alarmed by this action due to
the many rounded surfaces of the drop head. That said, docking can be
challenging in rough water but the Admiral and I have our process down.
Note that I have never had a more traditional type of davit system so I
cannot say how the Weaver system compares.

I do like having the dinghy stowed vertically since we have to pull away
from our dock rather sharply and a dinghy hanging horizontally would make
things more difficult.

All just FYI. I am probably making this sound harder than it actually is.
And again, I got excellent service and advice from the Weaver factory, good
luck!
