Thanks David, That's kinda my thinking too. Others have made suggestions but this solution allows me to deploy the ladder (via lines) from the water in the event I'm solo.

I dealt with this issue by putting a hinge in the ladder, so it bends forward at the top when closed. That way the lower ladder section doesn’t push away from you when you climb up on it from the water.
We also had our custom davits made as high as possible to minimise the problem, but hinging the ladder means that we can stop the ladder easily while the dinghy is hoisted on the davits.
