[C320-list] Stanchions

Hi Elan,
I agree with Dave. I had one of the gate stanchions get bent during a race. I bought a new one and installed it (two person) instead of trying to straighten it up. I was just too worried it would fail when I needed it most.
Best,
Bruce

Hello Elan,
I found they are impossible to straighten once bent. They will weaken and you run the risk of stressing out the footing if you use force to attempt to bend them back into position while still screwed in the deck. I eventually replaced each of mine. It is a two-person job, but doable.

If they are all at a consistent angle, you might consider leaving them alone because repeated bending of stainless steel will quickly work harden it and they can break. I had one that was bent and looked odd, so I straightened it with no ill effect, but after that anyone who grabbed a stanchion at the dock got an ear full.

The surveyor thought the PO's racing crew may have leaned on the lifelines a bit, but maybe that the way they are built? Not near the boat so can't take pics, unfortunately.
