[C320-list] Stanchions

Just another note about replacement stanchions. The replacement gate stanchions are shaped different than the original depending on where your model was manufactured. 320s manufactured in California have a wider angle on the lower support bar on the gate. 320s manufactured in Florida have a parallel angle on the lower support bar. I think this has something to do with later models and Catalina recognizing that the stanchions with the wider angle were not worth engineering a replacement grommet at the angled entry point where the lifeline entered the lower support bar. The stanchions with the parallel lower bar don’t have this issue.

The resulting problem of this modification is that the footing on the parallel bar is closer to the main support bar of the stanchion than the original angled lower bar. And so, when you replace an “angle” gate stanchion with a “parallel” gate stanchion, you’ll have to drill new screw holes in the deck. You will have two unused screw holes in the deck where the original angle stanchion was screwed in. Booooh!

Next time I’m on the boat I’ll look closely. Frankly during the survey I was concerned about other things. Boat leaks like a sieve, but that’s a topic for another thread.

The gate unit had to come off, which a task and a half, to be straitened in press. Putting back on was near impossible. For the other stanchion I devised a tool to hold the bottom using my body weight to minimize the stress on the deck and caulking. Then just levered the stanchion tube back into position. I can send pictures and dimensions of the tool to interested members.

If they are all at a consistent angle, you might consider leaving them alone because repeated bending of stainless steel will quickly work harden it and they can break. I had one that was bent and looked odd, so I straightened it with no ill effect, but after that anyone who grabbed a stanchion at the dock got an ear full.

The surveyor thought the PO's racing crew may have leaned on the lifelines a bit, but maybe that the way they are built? Not near the boat so can't take pics, unfortunately.
