I also had the same problem.  I read the no lubricate and don't disassemble warnings. I ignored both.  I can say wax didn't help.  Taking it apart was very easy. Just need a socket set. Just unscrew the two nuts  holding the tube to a gas shock,  like the ones on screen doors.  I ended up sanding the plastic friction piece to allow the table to move with less difficulty. If you lubricated it, also easy to clean while apart. I suspect some lubricants may cause the plastic friction piece to swell. I'd love to order just the plastic ring but don't know where that would be available as it is pop riveted in.

Thank you both, John and Jeff.  We successfully collapsed the table;
without lubricants or hammers.  Just rocked it as my wife and I pushed down
on the table top.  Now our grandkids won’t have to sleep in the dinghy!
