Although not like what you had, we had 70k on our Yacht Clubs anemometer
yesterday. Only gusts, usually 40 to 50k.

The most I have had the boat out in was approximately 50 sustained
knots, gusting higher. Hard to say exactly since the wind speed
indicator blew away reading 45 knots when we were still in the security
of the marina. Double reefed main and 135% jib about 1/3 out. Boat
handled well and a bemusing story how a USCG SAR heli tried to rescue us
as we took down sails. (Imagine what dropping the main must look like
in these conditions from a helicopter to people who aren't necessarily
personally experienced in sailing.) Not only did we not need rescuing,
they ended up sending us to help a third vessel while they went to
locate the one that they were originally after which turned out to be a
35 foot POWER boat about 7 miles away.

Adam:
Yes, I agree. What I was trying to say was that even if you day sail
in an area where you may not need the option of a second reef, you still
might want to have the option of a second reef when you took a longer
cruise.
Of course, when the 120 knot winds arrive along the Gulf Coast during
hurricane season, all those reef points get moved to the garage and
replaced with heavy anchors and lots of chain! Thankfully, this long
hurricane season is finally over.
