[C320-list] Spinnaker Crane

After speaking to my neighbor about making me one I decided to live with
good enough. In order to build a better single-bail crane I'd have to get up
on a very tall step ladder in the boatyard to remove mine so he could use it
as a template. While teetering up there I'd also have to do some measuring
to figure how far forward to extend the new bail. Material is another
matter. It seems that all of the single bail cranes are made out of 3/16" SS
plate and a 3/8" SS bar stock bail, instead of the 3/16" SS plate that mine
is made out of. I don't know how well that will work with our masthead and
whatever amount of overhang we will be dealing with. Will those materials
give it enough strength? In other words, it's way too much hassle, too much
work at the top of a 20 foot step ladder, and there is too much risk of
having to do it over a time or two to get it right.

I also called the guy at Rig-Rite. He wasn't very helpful. He admitted that
his C320 crane tends to bend, but insisted that it was a good design. He
could be right, some cranes are pre-bent from the factory. He said he could
make a single bail crane, but he wanted ME to give HIM the design specs, and
the price he quoted was ridiculous.

Sometimes good enough is good enough.
