We have also just purchased the Honda 2KVA generator and have it plugged into the shore power plug whilst anchored. We've found this is the best way to charge batteries, make hot water and run all appliances. Also keeps the diesel engine hours down at the same time.

No, what I do is connect the gen set to my shore power plug, and use the electric charger to the charging...

@000 Watts at 12 Volt is 166 amps. You can really charge something with
that.
The real question, is how small an inverter will power the mircowave.

It's funny, the unit was standard eqpt from the dealer I bought the boat
from...I have used the microwave 3 times while away from the grid and the
only other uses for the inverter have been to run a pc and misc charging for
Blackberry and hand held VHF radio, etc.....

What I do like is the high amp charger...when I'm at the island I hook up
the Honda 2000 gen to it and I charge the batteries in no time flat...

That is huge, it should easily handle the MW, TV and everything else.
I'm trying to find out how l an inverter I can get to just power the
microwave.

My dealer installed a Heart 20 (2000w) charger/ inverter and it has worked
great since I bought the boat..

What size inverter did you get?
We sometimes wish we had one.  We only have the OEM alternator, but we
useually are docked when we use it on shore power.
Is the true wattage requirement for the Microwave 650 as somone mentioned?
Do you need an oversize inverter to cover any startup surge.
The microwave would be the only thing we would need the inverter for and
maybe some small fans that would not be running at the same time.

On WindWalker II we use the microwave all the time.  I have an inverter that
generates the juice along with a Balmar alternator.

We also stop at other Yacht Clubs on out travels up and down the coast so
use it dockside.
