OD,

I posed the exact question to Mack Boring... why change from green if we are supposed to (and do) change coolant every year or two anyway?

Karl,

You have a lot of research time on your hands!! :)

My questions is, if you were to change your coolant each year (which I do), why would you need an 'extended life' coolant? Is the change worth it?

cuba libre 2
--------------------------
Regards,
OD

Sent from my BlackBerry Wireless Handheld

----- Original Message -----
From: C320-List-bounces
Sent: 04/18/2006 03:03 PM
To: C320-List at catalina320.com
Subject: [C320-list] FW: Re: Engine AntiFreeze

The DEX-COOL-type antifreeze that Yanmar now apparently recommends would be the ORANGE antifreeze. Dexcool is an OAT-based extended-life coolant (OAT stands for Organic Acid Technology). DEX-COOL is a trademark of General Motors. Look for "DEX-COOL approved" on the label. Some brands are: Prestone Extended Life 5/150, Havoline DEX-COOL, Zerex Extreme Life 5/150, Pennzoil® DEX-COOL® Extended Life. DEX-COOL-type antifreeze is a ethylene glycol, diethylene
glycol blend without silicate, phosphate, or borate inhibitors.

The RED antifreeze is an extended life coolant also, but does NOT carry the DEX-COOL label. It appears to be ethylene glycol based with the OAT inhibitors.

>From what I have read, mixing the orange with residual green can cause cause dilution of the OAT inhibitors at best and precipitation of the EG's silicates at worst. In other words, make sure all traces of the green is gone. I would expect red to have the same problems since it is OAT-based. I've seen some hybrid formulas marketed as being compatable with all types. I believe the hybrids are YELLOW!!

DO NOT CONFUSE ANY OF THESE WITH THE ANTIFREEZE SOLUTIONS USED TO WINTERIZE (FREEZE-PROOF) WATER LINES.

I am confirming Yanmar's recommendations with an email to Mack Boring tonite. Will report on what they have to say.

Karl Mielenhausen

2000 C320 Hull#690 "Silver
