Allan,

I didn't mean that 9kn are not achieveable, only that it takes certain things happening to allow you to hit 9's....if you are doing it in slack water, 10-15kn of wind and you're not comparing it with SoG on a GPS, calibrate!!

We have been at 8.6 knots on a GPS reading with a double-reefed main, 150
genoa about 30% rolled, and close reaching in 35+ knots of apparent wind.
Wing-on-wing with the genoa poled out and 1 reef in the main, we also have
been consistently above 8 knots in a.w. of 20+.  I have never seen 9 on the
GPS but would not doubt that we could or have hit it.

If you're doing 9kn on a consistent basis, go ahead and take out the owner's
manual and learn to calibrate your knot meter...

With a  following sea, 20kn of wind, going wing-on-wing in the Marina del
Rey to Seal Beac race two years ago we did 10kn once and 9kn for about an
hour..

I have made 7.3 on the knot meter once or twice in idea conditions, flat
water, off the wind and not surfing. This is within the margin of error
of the knot meter as compared to the theoretical hull speed. I'm sure 9
kts is not possible.

Without gps you don't know your sog - speed over ground - what are you
using to measure "over 9 knots"?
(Doubt your speed)

Hull speed is 1.34 X sq root of waterline length...which comes out to
7.1.  
As for speed thru the water or gps speed, I get over 9 knots (thru  the
water) 
on a reach, don't have a gps so ground speed is not available.
