Maybe the Pepsi promoted bacteria/organic growth. Lots of suger, you know.

On my previous boat, I flushed 100% with salt water. About twice a year,
I
poured a liter of Pepsi into the head and let it sit in the hoses, the
theory being that it would dissolve the calcification from the salt water
that builds up in the hoses over time. When I finally changed the hose,
it
was so calcified that Barry Bonds could have hit one out of the park with
it. And the head odor eventually got to the point where the Best Mate
came
to detest going down to the boat. On the C320, it has never seen salt
water
through the hoses and 5 years later - knock on wood - there are absolutely
no head odors. We keep a wide brim, rubber bottom, 16-ounce coffee cup
next
to the sink. For urine, we flush it through, follow with a cup of water,
then leave a cup behind. At the end of the day, we flush 3 cups through,
leave 2 behind, and a couple drops of the liquid chemical cleaner added to
that left behind. We do this so that the water left behind won't turn
during the week. But for some, I can see that this system is way too many
moving parts! (grin!)

We tried using the shower hose but find that it gets so caught up in the
tilting drawers in the aft cabin that it just isn't worth the effort. The
cup is so much easier.
