Jim, what I say is based on my experience with our #62. Things could be different 250 units later.
1. First, you must remove the hood over the compass. This I do with a flat screw driver blade. Find the small lip on the base of the cover that looks like you can just fit a medium blade in, insert the blade and give a twist while lifting up on the hood. It should come off. There you will find several small phillips head screws. Before removing the screws, run a strip of masking tape vertically from the top. Slit the tape where the compass joins the binnicle. This is to insure you get a proper alignment on reassembly. Now remove the screws and the compass should lift out. You may have to disconnect the wire for the compass light. There you have it.

2. The compass liquid is an oil of some sort. The viscosity is intended to dampen the movement of the card. I don't know what exactly it is; but, have never heard about any toxicity.

In all likelyhood, the compass can be repaired; but, considering the cost of a new one, you might feel better knowing it is new and under warranty. Any air bubble in a compass is a sign of problem and should be repaired or replaced.

While you have the compass out, do perform the Edson recommended maintenance on the steering machinery. You can get the information from the Edson website along with parts list and order form. Remove the fibreglass cover in the aft cabin, check, lubircate, and adjust the steering cables per Edson instructions. Lubricate the sheeves under there as well.

Before I replaced the fiberglass cover, I drilled 3 holes through the bulkhead at the very edge of where the seal on the cover contacts the bulkhead. This insures that any water or compass oil entering the cover will drain into the bilge rather than collect in the cover and seep into your bunk. Before replacing the cover, I applied some silicone grease to the seal to make it more watertight.

On the Edson parts list, you will see that they have several kits including a break servicing kit. Do the lubrication indicated. They recommend it be done each year. It's not difficult once you have done it.
