[C320-list] Filter in Water separator

I want to replace the filter in my fuel/water separator.  That's the big filter between the fuel tank and the engine.  It seems to me that the filter is below the level of the fuel tank and if I unscrew the cover the fuel will run freely out the fuel line.  Is there a valve somewhere that I don't see?
