John - The bilge pump should be wired directly to the battery.  To test,
turn the battery to OFF then at the panel, turn the bilge pump manual switch
on.  The pump should activate.  If the bilge pump does not activate, then
you have a wiring problem.

I was the one who wrote the original query .... I was also thinking that if
the batteries were OFF ... would the bilge pump work?

As I mentioned the guy who mentioned this to me is a respected person in our
area ... works on yanmar engines, does rigging , etc so it confused me ergo
the reason for the note.

Again, I am interested to hear the collective thoughts on this ....
