Jeff:

If you are racing then a deck sweeper (very low clew) sail is what you
will want.  This sail will not allow as much air to spill under the sail
as a higher clew sail will.  However, when ever you tack when close
hauled, someone will have to skirt the sail over the life lines in order
to sheet it in. In addition, you loose visibility on that side of the
boat, as the helms person cannot see other boats.  You will need a
lookout.   For a cruiser, without a large crew, this is a real pain.  You
want to be able to see where other boats are, and tack without someone
going forward on the leeward side of the boat to handle this chore.
