[C320-list] New Genoa/New Main

Hello:

I purchased a new 155% Genoa (3DL Marathon) from North 2 years ago.
Last summer North Sails had a sail rebate. Buy a sail, send your any
old sail back and receive 25% off your purchase. I was going to wait
until October to purchase the sail but, this was to good to pass up.

I have been told by sail makers that October there most willing
to dicker with price. Twenty five percent off, I felt, was a good deal.
So, I purchased a loose footed 3DL Marathon main sail with a larger roach.
I received the sail mid August and was able to use this sail the last 4
Wednesday night races in Milwaukee (Lake Michigan). All were very
light air (5 to 8 Knots.) We place 3rd place three of those 4 races.
Most of the summer we had light air races and we were place 9th,8th
or 7th place out of twelve boats. Our light air performance was greatly
improved. I feel that the new main made a bigger difference in performance
over the
Genoa. My boat is a 1995 vintage and this was replacement of the
original sails.

I am very happy with the North sails and the Chicago lofts service.

You need to decide how your going to use your boat, (day sail, race,
or cruise), what your budget is, and the type of winds in your sailing
area. What's a good in Milwaukee is not good in San Francisco as far as
head sail size. Take your time, get all the information you can, weight
the pro's & con's of the different types sails and the what type of service
you can expect from the loft and make your decision.

Dave,

I did the math. Now I understand what you were getting at. The constant LP
(155%) keeps the sail area constant regardless of the clew height. I guess
that's why the sailmaker was pointing out that the trade-off was better
pointing ability with a lower clew vs. better reaching ability (and
visibility under the foot) with a higher clew, and sail area wasn't a factor
in that conversation.

Thanks

Jeff
