Randy,

I spoke to the tech at Xantrex. The XC3012 will not provide 20 amps to each
leg independently. It has a max output of 30 amps. In the case of 2 equally
discharged battery banks, it will rapidly switch that 30 amps back and forth
between them. In the same situation, the Truecharge 40 will provide a
constant 20 amps to both banks and recharge the batteries a bit quicker. One
seemingly nice feature of the XC is that all 3 outputs are independent as to
charge phase, so your starter battery can be floating while the house is in
bulk or absorption phase. Again according to the tech, this isn't a big
advantage since modern auto (starter) batteries are designed for very high
voltages and are not likely to be damaged if the outputs are not sensed
independently. In my situation I don't see many advantages to the XC30, so
I'm tempted to go for the higher charging rate of the Truecharge 40.

Thanks

Jeff

The new model, xc3012, has 3 independent outputs. Not only can you have 3
different battery types, it provides 20 amps to each leg independently.

I will echo the suggestion to get the larger capacity charger, 40 AMPS.
However, the next step up for this type of charger is 50 AMPS, model xc5012.

When we go away and use our generator, the larger capacity charger will
charge the batteries much faster. Which means less time running the
generator. This is why I installed a Freedom 20. That 50 AMP charger output
is wonderful!

I hope this does not spark a big discussion about the rated capacity of
batteries and their capability to accept the higher current charging rate.
