I am not exactly sure of the source, but the exhaust seems to be the
culprit.  Over the years,  I have seen reports of  boaters overcome by
CO.  Most are power boaters, but occasionally there is a sailor involved.
 My thought is, if running the exhaust fan may avoid a problem, why not
do it.
