[C320-list] [c320] Drive shaft problem

Al,
The reason for no closer than 6 inches as I recall being told is that
the cutless bearing needs water flow to keep cool and lubricated to
prevent premature wear. A zinc closer than 6 inches interferes with water
flow for the cutless bearing.

Solved two issues with one stroke. Life is grand.

Just read some good advice. To prevent the shaft from slipping back to the rudder should the shaft come out of the coupling, coupling break, etc. place a SS hose clamp around the shaft in front of the packing.

Hi Irv,
It shouldnt be a big deal to replace while in the water.
What likely happened is that the two set-screw Bolts that screw through the rear half of the coupling to lock the coupling to the prop shaft werent wired in place.
In this picture, you can see the two Square Headed set screws Im talking about on the aft half of the coupling flange. Theyre wired to prevent them from loosening.

None of this should be a big deal unless the shaft was bent somehow.

Guys,
Just got a call from one of our partners on the boat.
Some how " the key to the drive shaft going into the coupling broke" and the end of the shaft is about three inches from the coupling.
Does anyone know what might have happened?
What is the shaft diameter, because someone in the boatyard suggested putting a pair of vise grips on the shaft to keep it from turning and falling back to hit the rudder in case we have to get towed to a boatyard.
Does any one know the size of the key that goes into the coupling, is it metric or English in size/
Has anyone ever reinstalled a drive shaft into a coupling while in the water and what to look for.
We replaced a bent bronze shaft about three years ago with a Stainless Steel shaft at Markley's on Middle River
Planning on going down to the boat tomorrow. Need a suggested list of tools to bring.
I can always have the boat towed to Markleys, but would want to buy a zinc ( I think the shaft is 1 inch Diameter) to put on the shaft to keep it from getting too far back to the stuffing box because it will spin if we get the boat towed.
