Thanks for the tip; I will definitely try the synthetic oil. Any
particular brand?

The Johnson is a 2 cylinder also and I love the extra punch I get
compared to my 5hp Mercury single cylinder that it replaced

Go to one of the synthetic oils and the smoke almost goes away and 
you never foul a plug. I left mine at idle for 45 minutes one day and 
when I got back to it, it was still running. I don't think you can do 
that with regular 2 cycle oil but a 4 stroke would still run till the 
gas is gone.
Engine is a Merc 6HP 2 cylinder
