[C320-list] Chesapeake Bay spots

Jeff,

I'm sure you will get many replies and I hope they come from a range
of locations. As you know, the Chesapeake Bay has some 8,000 miles of
shoreline, so the opportunities for find good anchorages is unlimited. I am
personally familiar with only the mid section of the Bay and just a bit with
some southern spots. For what it's worth, here are some thoughts:

On the western shore
.	Annapolis. Charming city, the Naval Academy, lots of boats. A few
marinas in Spa creek will have transient room; you can call the harbormaster
and try to get a mooring, then take a water taxi into town.
.	The Magothy River. North of Annapolis and the bridge. Beautiful
hilly shorelines, good anchorage behind Dobbins Island.
.	West River. For my money, the loveliest river on the mid western
shore. Sail into Galesville at the head of the river and eat at Pirate's
Cove, where there are slips available. Visit the Hartge Yacht Yard, my home
base - founded by Capt John Hartge in 1865 and still family run. A "pure
marina" (no pool, restaurant, tennis courts) with the very best yard on the
whole Bay. You can take a self-guided tour that is most interesting.
.	Patuxent river. A long and friendly place with many great spots to
explore.
.	Potomac River. Very wide at the junction with the Bay. A short
sail up to reach St Mary's, a very early settlement and lovely spot.

On the eastern shore
.	Wye river. Most interesting and a bit of a challenge to navigate.
Fabulous homes on the shores, which are flatter on this side of the Bay.
The Wye is off the Miles river, where St Michals is locates. St Mikes is
fun, but it's touristy and tends to be crowded.
.	Choptank river. If I had one place to go, this would be it. Broad
creek with so many great anchorages. The Tred Avon, with the great town of
Oxford at its head (tie up at the town marina, walk the streets, eat at the
Robert Morris Inn). LaTrappe creek, with a sandy beach and peaceful
shoreline.

And a couple of southern locations
.	Reedsville. Located at the end of the Northern Neck, a peninsula
bounded by the Potomac and Rappahannock rivers. An interesting town with a
number of marinas. Then sail into the Rappahannock and consider some land
time at the Tides Inn, which is a mile or so in from the mouth - very
comfortable place with nice slip facilities.

Finally, there are some good cruising guides, but the best is
"Cruising the Chesapeake", by William Shellenberger (now in 3rd edition).
You can find this at WM and the usual book stores (I got mine at Barnes &
Noble). This is a really outstanding guide, with very helpful descriptions
of locations and pertinent navigational advice.

	Best of luck to you.

I've not been able to find Gobal Marine impellers on the internet. The only
reference is to a discontinuance of operations of Global Marine by Global
Crossing. Perhaps they have been swollowed up by the recent business
failures.

Anyone know anything more about Global Marine?

Alec,

If you liked having the motor on the stbd side, another option would be to
rotate the unit just far enough to clear the instrument pod and just drill
another locator hole.

We purchased our Catalina 320 last year and we're wondering if anyone
knows if there is a company that sells the C320 sail cover logos. Ours
have deteriorated but the sail cover is fine and still has many years
left in it. I've found the following link
(http://www.sign-mgmt.com/store) in the C320 website and have tried to
contact them without success.

I'd appreciate it if anyone could suggest a company that sells these
logos.

Chris,

I would have had to grind 3/8" off the bottom of the post, so I just
relocated the instrument pod 1/2" lower.

I like operating the clutch with my right hand, keeping the motor far away
from the compass, tucking the motor into a less obvious spot and not having
to relocate the wires. This took a little head scratching, bit I think I
have it figured out. If I drill my own locator hole in the drive housing, I
should be able to install the unit with the motor low down on the stbd side.

I'll probably need to relocate the kill switch about 1/2" outboard of its
stock location, but that should be very easy to do.

I saw the instructions on not cutting the Ram Mic cable but there was no way
the plug was going down the tube. So I called the manufacturer and was told
that there a 9 wires, all color coded differently, inside the cable and as
long as all are spliced back color-to-color, there should be no problem. So
I went to WM, bought a 10-point bus, and installed the bus in the portside
aft locker just above the fridge motor. I cut the cable, ran the cable down
the tube, and wired everything together back at the bus. The real problem
turned out to be that the supplied cable is not long enough to get back to
the nav station. I had to buy an extension cord but once I had that, the
install was a breeze and no problems since. My Mic is mounted on the NavPod
for the chartplotter and is very convenient. I think I have a pix on the
Sea Shadow website of the final positioning.

To all Chesapeake Bay sailors:

What are your favorite spots to visit in the bay area?

In a couple of days my wife and I will be taking our first trip to the
Chesapeake Bay. We are staying in St. Michaels and plan drive each day to
whatever interesting towns and attractions we can find. Aside from just
relaxing and soaking up the scenery, we'd also like to get a measure of how
attractive the area would be for our rapidly approaching retirement years.

I'd appreciate any suggestions as to which towns, restaurants and
attractions we should take in. I hope to avoid art studios, craft shops and
museums unless they are really extraordinary or the weather is extra rainy.
Are there any especially good harbors that we should check out? Should we
plan to spend time in Annapolis, Virginia Beach, Norfolk or Newport News?

Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

JeffC
