[C320-list] Depth Sensor

Thanks Quentin, I haven't had too many responses on this one, I suppose
the depth sender unit doesn't fail often. I am trying to find a
replacement sender to install when I haul the boat next week.

I replaced my depth sounder three weeks (due to a slow leak the previous
season) when the boat was out of the water (on its cradle during winter
lay-up). After undoing the plastic ring nut, it would not come out of
the
hull, due to the old sealant. I used a wide chisel outside the hull to
try
to pry it off and at the same time using a wooden block and a hammer to
hammer it out from the inside. As it slowly worked out I was able to
cut
away more of the old sealant from the outside. This process took at
least
twenty-minutes. The sender will eventually come out. Once removed and
removed all the old sealant using a sharp wood chisel and then sanded
the
area inside and outside the hull around the hole with emery cloth (the
type
used when soldering copper pipe) and as a final step cleaned both
surfaces
with acetone.

I then used under-water marine sealant and installed the same sender (it
was
not defective which I also cleaned carefully) and tightened everything
up.
Once back in the water two days later....no more leak.

If you are replacing the sender, may I suggest you cut the old sender
cable
about five feet from the sender and splice it to the old wire under the
port
settee. I did that procedure with my speed sender last weekend as
trying to
get the cable up through the Edson guard was near impossible. This
splicing
has been done without problems by others on the List. Make sure you
solder
the wires and use heat-shrink tubing on that splice.

I haven't looked too closely but it looks like the depth sensor is
epoxied in place. Not sure how it can be removed.

Does anyone know where I can order a new sensor?

Pat, the speedo is easily replaced with the boat in the water like you
described. However, Kirk is talking about his depth sounder. That
transducer doesn't replace easily unless you haul the boat (and even
then, it's not too easy because you need to pull the wire through the
hole too).
