It's never a good idea to leave a furled head sail on the forestay with a strong blow expected regardless how you secure it. We had a boat in our marina left the head sail on in advance of a hurricane warning. The sail remained secure where the sheets were wrapped; but, the wind got under the edge of the sail about 3/4 of the way up and worked on it until the leech tore off and wrapped around the sail in such a way that it could not be unfurled.
It's always a good idea to remove sails in advance of a blow.
