[C320-list] upwind mainsail trim

CRA,
Well... if you never need or want to go in a certain direction at a
good speed then of course it doesn't matter..... but if you fall off
from close to the wind to a reach that's when your traveler is needed to
keep the main trimmed for speed. If you simply ease the main sheet your
boom will go to leeward where you want it... but - look up - the main is
now twisted and you are spilling all your air from the top half of the
main. That's fine if the wind has picked up and you want to keep the
heeling and weather helm under control - but you are losing speed. If
you instead ease the traveler your boom goes to same place (as above)
leeward to keep in tune with the shifted wind - but it is still giving
you all the power it has. If you still need to twist off/spill some air
you still can ease the main to stay as relaxed and upright as you wish.

My thought is that unless you really need to go in a certain direction

(i.e., very close to the wind), you will never have to use the traveler
at
any setting but centered. Am I right or is there some other compelling

reason to use it? Maybe I'm just lazy, and don't race.
